Out of adversity, there can be amazing hope and opportunity. This is exemplified by the story of Diane Warren, one of the most prolific and successful songwriters of our time. You know her work, even if you don’t realize it. Songs like If I Could Turn Back Time, Because You Loved Me, Un-Break My Heart, and I Don’t Want to Miss a Thing all written by Diane. These are iconic, career-defining hits. In fact, she has been named ‘Songwriter of the year” several times, and her songs have earned 17 Oscar nominations.
But her journey to success was anything but easy.
When Diane Warren was just 21 years old, she signed a five-year publishing contract. She was already writing hit songs at that age—but the contract gave her zero royalties. Imagine pouring your talent, time, and heart into your work and seeing others profit while you don’t. Eventually, she made a bold and difficult decision. She sued to get out of that contract.
That decision came with a steep price.
Because once she challenged the publishing company, she was effectively blocked from signing with any other publisher. Doors closed. Opportunities disappeared. From the outside, it looked like her career could stall before it ever truly took off.
And then something remarkable happened. Someone suggested she self-publish.
At the time, that may have felt like a last resort. But forty years later, it turned out to be the greatest gift adversity could have given her. Today, Diane Warren owns 100% of the publishing rights to one of the most extraordinary song catalogs in music history.
That’s not luck.
That’s determination.
That’s vision.
That’s perseverance.
That’s belief.
And belief plays a huge role in this story. Diane’s parents were very different when it came to supporting her dream. Her mother didn’t believe she could make a living writing songs. In fact, after Diane once shared that she had finished a song, her mom replied, “Great—now go down to Ralph’s and see if you can exchange that song for some groceries.” But her father? He believed in her. Fully. Sometimes all it takes is one person believing in your dream to help you keep going when the world is skeptical. That’s why this story matters so much to me. A good friend recently sent me a text. I don’t remember every word of it—but I remember how it ended: “I believe in you.” And I’ll tell you, that line landed. It really lifted me.
Front-Row Friday Challenge Reach out to someone today and simply say: “I believe in you.” You never know how much hope, courage, and momentum those four words might spark. Because out of adversity, there could be opportunity, hope, and inspiration.
And it’s a reminder that belief can change everything
Happy Front-Row Friday!
