How do you talk to you? That might sound like a strange question, but your inner dialogue—your self-talk—is one of the most powerful influences in your life. And the kicker? Most of us don’t even realize how harsh, critical, or defeating that internal voice can be. But here’s the good news: you can flip the script.
Science Says: Positivity Pays Off
Studies have consistently shown that people with a positive mental attitude and an optimistic outlook tend to live longer, healthier lives. Why? Because optimism lowers stress, improves resilience, and boosts your immune system. So yes, that pep talk you give yourself in the mirror might be doing more than just boosting your mood—it could actually be extending your life.
A 4-Year-Old Role Model I recently saw a video that made my heart melt—a little 4-year-old girl was standing in front of a mirror, giving herself the most adorable affirmations: “I love my mom. I love my dad. I love my house. I love my pajamas…” It was simple. It was pure. And it was powerful.
That tiny girl has already learned something many adults are still trying to master: words matter, self-talk matters. We can take a page out of her pajama-loving book and start each day with affirmations of our own:
- I am capable.
- I am strong.
- I am resilient.
- I can do hard things.
- I can bounce back.
Shift the Script
Sometimes our self-talk goes to a dark place. Instead of saying, “I made a mistake,” we say, “I am a mistake.” But you are not your mistakes. You are the lesson learned. You are the comeback story. You are the growth. So today, start noticing how you talk to yourself. Are you cheering yourself on… or tearing yourself down?
Start with Gratitude
If you’re not sure where to begin with positive affirmations, start by making a list. What are you grateful for today?
- A cozy home
- Supportive friends
- That morning coffee
- The fact that you’re still standing
Gratitude is a gateway to optimism. And optimism builds a stronger foundation for the self-talk that leads to confidence, hope, and action. The More You Look, The More You See.
Here’s what I’ve learned: the more you look for positive things in your life, the more you’ll find. The more you affirm your strengths, the stronger they become. Use affirmations even if you don’t 100% believe them…yet. Your words matter. Your thoughts matter.
So, on this Front-Row Friday, give yourself the gift of positive self-talk. Talk to yourself like someone who deserves to be living in the front-row. You are strong. You are capable. You are courageous. You are all the things.
Take care!

Marilyn
