The true key to being both a great leader and a great networker isn’t found in strategies, scripts, or even titles. It’s found in something simple yet powerful: curiosity. I recently heard Michael Dominguez, President and CEO of Associated Luxury Hotels International, speak about networking. His message wasn’t just about making business connections—it was about leading with authenticity and creating deeper human connections.
What stood out to me most was his intentional practice of regularly meeting with each of his team members one-on-one. And here’s the twist: he doesn’t talk about work. Instead, he asks about their lives, their passions, their families, their stories. He’s genuinely curious about who they are as people. And because of that, his team feels seen, heard, and valued.
So the next time you’re at a networking event or meeting new people in general, resist the urge to default to “What do you do?” Instead, try asking:
- What are you passionate about outside of work?
- What’s something you’re most proud of?
- What’s on your bucket list?
These questions open doors to authentic conversations. They show people that you see them as more than their job titles or business cards.
Lead From the Heart
The best leaders lead with curiosity—not judgment. They don’t hide behind their titles or positions. They connect with others on a deeper level, and that connection builds trust, loyalty, and respect.
And remember, when people feel seen and heard, they feel valued. That’s how you become not just a successful leader or networker—but a memorable one. Here’s to leading with authenticity, connecting with curiosity, and making every interaction a front-row experience.
