How do you react when one of your friends—or even a competitor—achieves success? Do you celebrate them, or do you secretly feel a twinge of jealousy? It’s natural to feel envy when someone else gets the recognition, the promotion, or the opportunity you wanted. But I invite you to consider a different mindset: what if you shifted from resentment to celebration?
A Bigger Pie, Not a Smaller Slice
Cavett Robert, founder of the National Speakers Association, once said, “Instead of competing for a piece of the pie, why not come together and grow a bigger pie?” That wisdom changes everything. If we see life and business as a competition for limited slices, jealousy makes sense. But when we believe the pie can grow, someone else’s success doesn’t take away from ours—it expands what’s possible for everyone.
Celebration Over Resentment
As a professional speaker, I’ll admit there are times I’ve thought, “Why did they get that keynote gig? I would have been perfect for that event.” That old mindset only left me frustrated and drained.
But when I chose to celebrate my colleagues’ wins instead of resenting them, everything shifted:
- My energy stayed positive.
- My relationships grew stronger.
- And my business benefitted, because people prefer working with someone who genuinely cheers others on. There’s more joy in lifting others up than in holding yourself down with envy.
Your Front-Row Invitation
So, here’s my invitation to you today:
- Think of someone who recently had a big win—friend, coworker, or even competitor.
- Reach out with a genuine message of congratulations.
- Notice how it feels when you celebrate instead of resent.
I can tell you from experience: that simple shift will lighten your heart and open doors you didn’t expect. There’s always enough success to go around. And when we focus on building a bigger pie, we all get a front-row seat to something amazing.
So—who can you celebrate today?

Your Head Usher,
Marilyn
