What Would Your Next Twelve Days Look Like?
Imagine you had a film crew following you around for twelve days. What would they see? This thought-provoking question is the heart of today’s Front-Row Friday message. I’m a huge sports fan and often learn valuable life lessons by studying great athletes. Today’s front-row Friday message is inspired by the documentary “Federer: The Last Twelve Days,” which chronicles Roger Federer’s final days before announcing his retirement from professional tennis. I didn’t know much about Roger before watching this documentary but now, I have a newfound admiration for him. Here are the three life lessons I learned from him.
1. Live with Intention
Federer knew he was being recorded, capturing everything from the highs to the lows. This awareness made him incredibly intentional about how he spent his time, where he focused his energy, and who he chose to surround himself with. Imagine if you had a film crew following you for the next twelve days. Who would you spend time with? What activities would you prioritize? Would you make different choices than you do now?
2. Foster Healthy Competition
The documentary showcases the fierce yet respectful rivalry between Federer, Nadal, and Djokovic. Despite their intense competition, there is a profound mutual admiration and respect among these athletes. This made me reflect on my own competition. Do I embrace my competitors? Do I have a healthy respect and admiration for their work? And do I express that appreciation? Watching these tennis greats express genuine love and admiration for Federer during his retirement announcement is a lesson in valuing and celebrating our rivals, not to mention healthy sportsmanship.
3. Build a Legacy
Federer’s journey isn’t just about his achievements on the court but also about the legacy he leaves behind. Imagine not just the next twelve days, but the next twelve months or even the next twelve years. How would you spend your time if you knew a documentary would be made about your life? Who would you spend it with? This thought extends beyond our immediate actions and into our long-term goals and relationships. It’s about creating a life that is a testament to your values and aspirations.
Final Thoughts
As we ponder these lessons, let’s aim to spend our lives with front-row friends, engaging in front-row activities, and living in our front-row—however we define it. Imagine the documentary of your life being filled with moments of intention, healthy competition, and a lasting legacy. Until next time, keep living in the front-row!
P.S. For those interested, you can watch “Federer: The Last Twelve Days” on Prime Video. I highly recommend it for both sports enthusiasts and anyone looking to glean life lessons from one of the greatest tennis players of all time.
