Today, I want to dive into a subject that feels like a warm hug on a cold day—joy. Let’s take a moment to really define it. What is joy? Joy is that deep sense of contentment and happiness that isn’t dependent on external circumstances. It’s an enduring delight, a state of peace and fulfillment that you carry with you, regardless of what’s happening around you. The best part is, you get to decide what joy means to you and how much of it you allow into your life. Isn’t that empowering?
So, how do you bring more joy into your life? Here are a few suggestions I think you’ll find helpful.
1. Practice Gratitude
You’ve probably heard this a million times but let me reinforce it: gratitude is the gateway to joy. Earlier, I mentioned that joy isn’t based on external factors. It’s something you can cultivate, and a great way to do that is through gratitude. Every now and then, take a moment to reflect on what you’re truly grateful for—the simple things.
This morning, for example, my email was down. I could’ve let that small inconvenience ruin my day, but instead, I focused on staying present and appreciating the things that were still working. I thought, “I have a roof over my head, a phone that works, and Zoom is up and running.” Instead of stressing over what wasn’t working, I chose to focus on the blessings I still had.
What are the simple things in your life that you can be grateful for? Take a moment to acknowledge them, and you’ll find joy starts to seep in.
2. Be Fully Present
It’s so easy to get caught up worrying about the future or dwelling on the past. How many times have you found yourself stressing about something that hasn’t even happened yet? We sometimes let our minds wander into the “what ifs,” and it robs us of our current joy.
Being present is one of the most powerful ways to reclaim your joy. Let go of what’s already happened and stop worrying about what might happen. Joy lives in the now, so give yourself permission to be fully present in your life. Engage with the people around you, savor the small moments, and remind yourself that this moment is enough.
3. Be Creative and Playful
This one might sound counterintuitive in our productivity-obsessed world but being creative and playful is a fast-track ticket to joy. Now, I don’t mean scrolling endlessly on social media. We all know that can lead to the dreaded comparison trap. And as they say, comparison is the thief of joy.
Instead, focus on celebrating your uniqueness. What brings you joy and connection to others? What lights you up? For me, it could be something as simple as enjoying a bouquet of fresh flowers, lighting a scented candle, or soaking in a lavender bath. It could also mean spending time with people who uplift my spirit. Just the other day, I had a delightful lunch with a dear friend at Lake Las Vegas. I rarely visit that area, and it turned out to be a beautiful afternoon that filled me with gratitude and joy.
So, what sparks joy in your life? What simple pleasures can you lean into to invite more delight into your day?
