Are you guilty of the one thing that people do wrong when setting goals? I’ve done this in the past and I want to show you how to avoid this mistake.
There is NO judgement when it comes to your goals, dreams, aspirations – however you define your Front-Row. But one of the ways to make it easier to accomplish your goals is write your goal in such a way that you will be able to say either yes you accomplished it or no, not yet.
For leaders, it’s tempting to set a goal to be a better leader, to be a more influential leader, etc. But that’s not specific enough. Whatever your goal is, write it in a way that you can definitively say yes or no. You can decide what it would look like to be a more successful, influential leader for example, like this:
My goal is to promote 3 people to a new level of management within my own division by this date next year.
Great! Now you can track your progress with either a yes or a no.
I’ve been guilty of this in the past. My dream has always been to speak fluent French. But how could I measure that? Instead, I made a commitment that I will spend a little time every single day either speaking, reading, or writing in French. I can’t emphasize enough the power of little steps you can measurably take each day that will eventually lead to you achieving big goals. In addition to classes, I use the Duolingo app on my phone to mark my progress. Here’s the cool thing – this week I hit a milestone of 1095 days…yes, three years… in a row of practicing my French! (Yes, I had a lot of time on my hands during COVID!) If I would have looked at a three year goal, it may have been a bit overwhelming. Instead, I focused on what was easily accomplished: 15 minutes a day.
For this Front-Row Friday, re-write your goals to make it easier for you to say yes or no, and break your goals into bite-sized pieces that will add up to a huge difference for you. With tons of encouragement, go for it! I can’t wait to hear about you crossing things off your goal list or your bucket list!
