Do you have a mentor? The path to your front-row can be an easier journey if you have a mentor who is illuminating the path for you. You know, like an usher! I’ve had a mentor ever since I saw my very first motivational speaker when I was 17, Roger Crawford. From that day forward, I sought out people who could mentor me to have my career dreams come true. There have been hits and misses that I have seen with mentors and mentees, so here are the four things to ensure you are on the right mentorship path.
4 Musts to remember:
1. Know what you want.
You need to be prepared with your vision for your career or the outcome you’re looking for if it’s a specific situation you need mentoring on.
2. Ask a lot of questions.
Remember, a mentor is there for guidance and direction and feedback. Ask questions, use them as a resource, that’s what they are there for! Don’t forget, now is the time to listen for their response, don’t interrupt with rationalization or justification.
3. Be open to feedback.
I’ve seen people who have the trajectory of their life change as a result of feedback given from their mentor. Your mentor has a different perspective on your situation than you, so be open for their feedback. You cannot learn and grow without an open mind.
4. Follow up!
First and foremost, thank the person for their time and feedback. More importantly, let them know how you implemented their idea and what the outcome was.
The path to the front-row can be long, arduous, and filled with potholes. A mentor can help you navigate your path to avoid those potholes!
