You’ve probably come across the saying, “Get all your ducks in a row,” especially when embarking on a dream or a bucket list venture. I’ve even explored this concept in a previous ‘Front-Row Friday’ video. Just recently, this idea resurfaced during an intriguing interview for the Power Lunch Podcast with Nabeel Alamgir, co-founder and CEO of Lunchbox, and tech innovator. One insightful question he posed—which I’ll share the link with you once it airs—was about my transition from a Crisis Counselor in Seattle to a Hall of Fame business keynote speaker. He also inquired about a core belief I impart to my audiences: “You don’t have to have all your ducks in a row at the outset of your success journey, you just need to clearly define your ‘End Duck’, and ducks will appear along the way.
Reflecting on my counseling days, where assessing situations to devise action plans was routine, who knew that those skills are now instrumental today in addressing my corporate audiences about managing change and uncertainty.
Little did I know, when I transitioned to the finance sector, that I’d be chosen for an 18-month leadership program for high-potentials. This training would culminate in a seminar led by someone in my dream job—an employee at my own company, hidden within a department I didn’t even know existed! These serendipitous steps were shaped by a vision my father encouraged me to define. He always encouraged me to focus on the end duck, and steps to get there will appear.
However, the true companions on the journey to the ‘front-row’ are the relationships forged along the way. With all the current buzz about A.I. in business, it’s crucial to remember that no amount of technology can replicate the essence of human connection. These bonds don’t form by chance; they require care and attention. When deeply rooted, they support us through life’s turbulent times, especially when we can’t clearly see our next duck.
Here’s an inspiring tidbit: Nabeel moved to this country at 15 and started as a busboy. He embraced the power of manifesting dreams and climbed the ranks to become CMO of the same restaurant chain. Eventually, he co-founded Lunchbox and raised a staggering $100 million. He is a testament to the power of believing in your ‘End Duck’ and the hard work it takes to turn dreams into reality.
So, for today’s ‘Front-Row Friday’ challenge, ponder the magnitude of your ‘End Duck.’ Is it time to dream bigger? Evaluate the people in your front-row (your circle of influence) and consider the quality of those connections. If they are people that you value and they value you, reach out today—be it an old friend, a client, or a family member. It’s time to nurture these vital connections and see them flourish.
Have a great Front-Row Friday,
Your Head Usher,
Marilyn
