Have you ever felt like you were in the dark? You know, where you are facing an unexpected detour due to unforeseen circumstances? I know in my keynote presentations, I talk about getting a front-row seat in life and when you are living your best life, you illuminate the path for others. And, the best seat in the house is to be like an usher in Las Vegas, showing people how to get to their seat with a flashlight. You may never know how much you inspire people by how you lead and live your life. You are shining your light when you feel great about who you are and what you are doing. But, what if you are in the dark and you don’t feel like you have the light to shine? I get it. Here are three things to help you.
1. You are not alone. I go through ups and downs and unexpected turns (hello cancer diagnosis for a spouse) and I feel like I’m in the dark too. It happens less now, but it still happens. Know that you are NOT alone…ever.
2. Just like the story I tell in today’s Front-Row Friday video, focus on the light. Focus on that light directly in front of you to help you get through the detour. Like lights on taillights of a car in front of you in a rainstorm, focus on the light. Not the big picture, not the mess that caused the detour, just the light in front of you. Focus on how that light will help you navigate your next move. Maybe it’s the light of hope, or the light of faith, or the light of optimism. or even the light of possibility. Find the light and focus on it.
3. Take action. No matter what you are going through that makes you say you are in the dark, there is someone out there, I guarantee it, who has been through it too and made it out on the other side. Find those people. If they are famous, read their book. If they have a podcast, listen to it. If you know them, ask them to lunch or coffee to have some of their light shine on you. Even if it’s an email or comment in social media, reach out. I can’t guarantee they will respond but they won’t if you don’t try.
Do these three things and soon you will be illuminating the path for others to get out of their darkness.
Here’s to being that light…eventually!
